Off The Wall
Jerwood Gallery, Hastings
Until 15 April 2018
The Jerwood’s first exhibition of 2018 celebrates the quiet genius of Gus Cummins, who has lived and worked in Hastings for the past 40 years.
Large canvases display an intriguing mix of apparently random objects, often appearing to float in a weightless environment. In one work hats drift above a pheasant, who looks solemnly on. In another, cones, cylinders, boxes and elegant squiggles (all beloved by designers), combine surrealism and playfulness in an effortlessly artful way.
Effortless it may appear, but I suspect that this level of sophistication took a considerable time to achieve.
Work to cherish, I loved it!
